Some homes stand out above the rest; they are places that were “designed with intention” to manifest an owner’s desires and crafted with care to fulfill their needs. Although the end result is made with those very personal ideals in mind, we can all recognize these special places when we see them: the universal appeal shines through. Austin Design has had the pleasure, many times, to be a part of this creative process and see these dreams come true. And sometimes an opportunity arises to share in the satisfaction!
One of our favorite residential architecture examples is now one of these rare opportunities: a beautiful country home in Heath, Massachusetts. Completed in 2008, the project entailed an extensive renovation of an existing structure including a new kitchen with Viking appliances, an additional bathroom, and a laundry room on the first floor. Structural additions to the home were significant, consisting of a breakfast nook, entry foyer, window bay, and a two-story screened porch for protected relaxation. But the crown jewel of this rural retreat is the attached pool house, with its clean modern lines.
The pool design is based on the spanning wings of an airplane; the homeowner is an avid aviator and a tri-athlete. It houses a 75-foot-long lap pool; photos of this luxurious pool, lit at night, have proven to be the most popular shares on our Houzz account! It’s truly a striking design, with its wide planar roof overhangs and expansive glazing with sliding doors to let the natural light and fresh air inside the year-round training space. Cedar-clad inside and out, with spare and careful trim joinery, the modern pool house blends into its environment with curving stone walls, a meditation garden, and fittingly-inspired landscaping by Joan S. Rockwell Associates. The client’s desire to enhance the landscape they loved was the genesis of the project, which then grew exponentially to include the pool house and the residential renovations.
Seamlessly designed to blend with its setting in Heath, MA, the home is located right on Vermont’s southern border and at the edge of western Massachusetts’ Berkshire region. This makes it a perfect vacation escape for family and fun, with skiing, kayaking, hiking, and boating, along with significant cultural attractions such as world-class museums and performance spaces just minutes away. The owners are sad to be faced with letting this gem go, but having come to this realization, they’re now motivated and the property is priced accordingly; please contact Austin Design if you are interested in further details and contacting the sellers. We’d love to tell you about it and help them find an appreciative buyer!
