Adjacent to a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home, our clients owned this land for 15 years before deciding to build their final new home. The house was based on a conceptual design by Bob Phinney, who melded Frank Lloyd Wright’s style with more overtly Asian influences. The open, single floor plan includes a solarium and passive solar design. A woodstove, serviced by a wood waiter and connected to a¬†centrally located chimney provides back-up heat. Conservation elements include eight-inch-thick walls, air-sealing, triple-glazed windows with integral shades, and a high-efficiency boiler connected to a radiant floor system. Locally harvested and milled black locust flooring, a tiger maple ceiling, and oak trim contribute to a warm interior environment.
