type: renovation and addition
status: completed 2006

This couple built their reproduction colonial saltbox themselves over 25 years ago. In the years since, they found that the home was no longer responding as well to the ways in which they wanted to live. Because of the couple’s connection to the house and to the land, a sensitive and perceptive design response was critical.

Working closely with them, we proposed an approach that allowed the house to change just as they had. A new addition was designed as an attached cottage, contrasting with the formal rigor of the original house while also complementing its traditional flavor. The result was a renovation that updated the house while maintaining an aesthetic continuity with the original.
